Another document for BRC? Or rather a great opportunity?

To meet increasingly stringent customer requirements, a mass of documents has been produced, sometimes with more attention paid to updating them and filling in the associated forms than to their original purpose. This can leave little time to 'train' everyone in the company.

Roadmap for behavioural change

Wouldn't it be nice if every operator, every manager and every employee were made aware of food quality and safety, so that all improvement initiatives come from everyone and not just the quality department?

Roadmap for behavioural change

To cultivate this reflex, we need to change our behaviour, which is exactly what food safety culture is all about. Version 8 of the BRC stipulates that work on food safety culture should start as early as February 2019. But how do you tackle that? We offer you a practical roadmap

Roadmap for behavioural change

  1. Set up the safety culture team

  2. Determine the themes by brainstorming and asking questions. In doing so, it is important to cover the different topics of the GFSI standard:Vision and mission

    • People

    • Awareness of hazards

    • Adaptability

    • Coherence

    • Draw up action plans

    • Follow these on

    • Communicate

    • Review annually.

      Practice

The questions in point 2 should be as specific as possible. Here is an example of a question and possible answers:

"Do you feel that food safety is part of everyday politics?

      • Not at all

      • Only during visits by clients and external auditors

      • We get training on the subject, but we often don't have the time to pay attention to it.

      • We get training on this and we follow it because we have to.

      • We pay attention to it every day and it is always expected of us.

        Preparing for the audit

During this year, you must complete items 1 to 3. The next stages will not be audited until 2020. Since the food safety culture must be driven by management, they may also explain it during the audit.

Note! Currently, this is only a BRC requirement, but since the culture of food safety has been incorporated into the GFSI, the IFS and FSCC 22000 will soon follow!
